This describes how close to the centre of a network that a node is. A node can be anything on sliding scale from central to peripheral. Centrality can be calculated in a number of ways, but most usually it is calculated in four ways: [[degree centrality]] (number of degrees that a node has D/(n-1)); [[closeness centrality]] (the sum of the shortest paths to each other node in the network); [[betweenness centrality]] (a measure of what extent a node is between other nodes - nodes with high betweenness centrality are valuable to the network as they perform brokerage functions); [[eigenvector centrality]] (a measure of directionality)

The term community of practice was first used by Lave and Wenger (1991) and is used to describe groups of people who engage in a process of collective learning, for example, an after-school band, or a network of legal professionals working on similar cases. Communities of practice may be formal or informal, but, they share a number of characteristics. Wenger (2007) details three elements that distinguish a community of practice from an ordinary group:

	The domain – Participants have a shared interest or shared goal and through this, a collective identity exists.
	The community – Participants build relationships and provide assistance and support to each other.
	The practice – Through the interaction between members of the group, a collective knowledge is built.

Wenger (1998) notes that initially, people join a community on the periphery (that is, they do not often take a central role in the community). As they gain knowledge and experience, they become more involved in the main processes of the community and take a more central role. Wenger uses the term legitimate peripheral participation to describe this process. Legitimate peripheral participation stresses the need for an active participation in communities of practice as social interaction is what newcomers need to gain the experience and knowledge to move to the centre of the community (Taha and Cox, 2010:397). The value of the collective knowledge of the group is particularly emphasised and the discussions and conversations that take place between the community’s participants gradually help to build a large body of knowledge, which can provide important information and support to its members. Boundary spanners across community borders also have a role to play, bringing in knowledge and information from other communities (Taha and Cox, 2010).

Montgomery and McDowell (2008) argue that the international student body is a good example of an informal community of practice. International students have a common goal (academic success) and this forms the basis of the community and helps create a shared identity. They note the existence of informal initiation into the group where more experienced students pass on information and stories they themselves received as newcomers (legitimate peripheral participation). A community’s members, rather than expending effort forming their own connections and maintaining these ties while the student body is ever-changing, can access the social capital that the group has already established. Therefore, these groups can have a valuable role in the provision of social support.

However, there are situations where communities of practice can be weak or exhibit power relationships that inhibit entry and engagement (Smith, 2009). Where communities of practice are predominantly monocultural, as may be the case with international students, the shared identity may become a barrier to entry, and boundary spanning (that is cross-networking) may be disinhibited, which can prevent important information and support coming in to the group. Rosenthal (2006) argues that monocultural groups tend to look inwards for support, often unintentionally isolating themselves from others. Nevertheless, the understanding that international students can access social support from participation in communities of practice underlies the importance of these communities in the student experience.

The international student experience is situated, for the most part, within a broader human developmental context and takes place within the period defined by Arnett (2000) as emerging adulthood – the period of development that occurs to individuals aged between 18 and 25. The theory of emergent adulthood stresses the psychological and subjective experiences experienced by people in this age group (Arnett, ibid.). This period in human development is characterised by experiences of change and exploration, identity exploration and development and freedom without supervision (Tanner and Arnett, 2009:40; Hefner and Eisenberg, 2009:492). It is argued that this period of life is critical in human life development and the experiences that a person goes through at this age are integrated into a person’s identity more than at any other age (Arnett, 2000). This is more likely than ever to take place in full-time education (though this is by no means true for all emerging adults). Studying abroad is a development related to the rise of emerging adulthood as young adults have a curiosity and openness to new experiences and also the opportunities to travel and study abroad.

Historically, the concept of emerging adulthood has only emerged in the past forty years or so in the post-industrial information age arising from increased need for, and access to post-secondary education. As people of this age negotiate the changes and new freedoms that they encounter, they may experience homesickness, isolation and increased personal conflict (Hefner and Eisenberg, ibid.). Emerging adults are particularly sensitive to emotional stimuli (particularly to negative emotions) and psychiatric disorders peak in prevalence at this stage (Tanner et al. 2007). However, overall, evidence suggests that most people at this age are optimistic and hopeful about their futures (Arnett, 2000).

Moreover, this period of human development is particularly characterised by the change in human relationships that emerging adults have (Arnett, 2000). Emerging adults may renegotiate their relationships from one of dependency (usually on their parents) to independence or shared responsibility. They are also more likely to choose relationships that are identity-based – and look more for an identity fit with people and a deeper more personalised attachment (Collins and Van Dulmen, 2006). As young adults move to university, friendships from school diminish with distance and time and there is a need for students to form new connections. Some may establish deep relationships with those around them. Conversely, others may find it more difficult to establish relationships and, for many, emerging adulthood is characterised as a period of isolation and loneliness. It is safe to say, however, that there is a broad variance in how emerging adults form and change their relationships and there is a diversity of patterns and trajectories that people follow from adolescence to emerging adulthood. 

Since the concept of emerging adulthood is a recent phenomenon, many students may be the first of their families to experience this stage of development and this may result in tensions between the way they and their families view the world. Being young now has changed so dramatically in the past half century, and it continues to change dramatically, particularly for those coming from cultures which are experiencing rapid economic and social change (Arnett, 2000). For students going abroad to study, they must negotiate the challenges of emerging adulthood while adjusting to a different culture and many may not make a comfortable transition.

Preferential attachment is a way of explaining how networks form hubs and is best modelled using the Watts-Strogatz model of network development. This model is where individual nodes have a higher likelihood of forming relationships with other nodes that are more popular (ie. have a higher degree). The Watts-Strogatz model shows that preferential attachment helps explain how nodes form and networks using this model are shown to have degree distribution that follows a Power-Law ([[Heavy tail distribution]]) distribution (ie. a few large hubs with many more smaller hubs). Other models, such as Erdos Renyi graphs and Barabasi Albert graphs, do not show power law distributions.

A famous example of a network model of preferential attachment is Google PageRank, where websites link to other websites based on how many links already point to that website.

The development of social support is closely related to the concept of social capital – the collective value that a social network may bring an individual (Putnam, 1993). Bourdieu (1983:249 defines social capital as “the aggregate of the actual or potential resources which are linked to possession of a durable (social) network”. Social capital is built up through a complex set of interactions between groups and individuals that may be informal (such as friends and family) or formal (for example, classes at college, clubs and societies and church groups), which provide information and resources to an individual (Neri and Ville, 2006). The number and the perceived value of connections between individuals and groups are particularly emphasised. Ellison et al. (2007) distinguish between three types of social capital at university: maintained capital (connections that already exist, for example friends or family), bridging capital (weak connections with people in different networks, such as in a sports team, or others on a course) and bonding capital (new connections which will become strong connections).

Research shows that high social capital equates to well-developed social support as the connections between people provide access to the support systems that impact positively on the wellbeing of an individual (Drentea and Moren-Cross, 2005). Well connected students have better mental health (Hefner and Eisenberg, 2009), report better marks (Kuh et al. 2005) and view their experiences at university more positively (Hendrickson et al, 2010) than those with fewer friends. According to a study by McCarthy (2010) students reporting the greatest levels of satisfaction with their academic progress, were typically the ones who interacted most regularly with their peers in the widest range of social and academic contexts. In contrast, low social connectedness has been linked to depression (Dao et al., 2007), perceived stress (Wohlgemuth and Betz, 1991; Amponsah, 2010), increased use of medical professionals (Miville and Constantine, 2006) and is negatively correlated with mental and physical health in students (Jou and Fukada, 1996). Moreover, it may also lead to poor academic achievement. In a study of Turkish adolescents, Demir and Tarhan (2001:113) found that as the level of loneliness of students increased, academic achievement decreased.

International students, as with any migrant population, experience a loss in social capital when they move to a new country and there is a need for them to develop new connections. However, studies on the social experience of international students emphasise the difficulties that students have in building relationships. The themes of social isolation and loneliness in particular have been dealt with extensively within this literature as students are distanced from friends and family at home. Sawir et al. (2008:149) note that loneliness is endemic in the international student body and they report that many students feel a profound sense of alienation. This often diminishes over time, though for some students these feelings remain throughout their sojourn. Brown and Holloway (2008:232) note that feelings of loneliness are at their height in the first few weeks of their stay and emotional experiences are particularly intense in the beginning.

However, it would be wrong to portray the international experience as essentially negative. In a critique of the literature of the experiences of international students, Montgomery and McDowell (2008) argue that too much emphasis has been given to the difficulties students have adjusting to their new culture. They state that, rather than being an isolated and disadvantaged group, the international student body is in fact a very strong community based on shared experience and shared goals. Although loneliness is a part of the international experience, for most students, it is a tremendous experience and students have an opportunity to form a wide variety of friendships and connections during their sojourn. Students come to the UK because they want to study here and encounter new ways of thinking while exploring a new culture (Sherry, et al. 2010:33). They generally perform well, often better than local students (Kingstone and Forland, 2008:210) and are perceived to be well-adjusted and satisfied with their educational experiences according to student service professionals (Walker, 2001). 

Nevertheless, international students tend to evaluate their experience abroad as stressful (Amponsah, 2010) and the loss of social capital and the changes in relationship that participants undergo during their sojourn are significant. In order for students to obtain the social support that they need for a positive experience at university, stocks of social capital need to be replenished in their new environment. There has been some debate about how exactly social capital is developed. The next section looks at how international students develop relationships while at university from different perspectives.
With the development of more sophisticated social media over the past twenty years or so, there has been a growth in interest in how social networks are organised. Social networking theory has emerged as a way of explaining how people and organisations connect to each other (Haythornwaite, 2005; Haythornwaite and de Laat, 2010). From this perspective, individuals are organised into social networks which are connected to each other through strong (Krackhardt, 1992) or weak ties (Granovetter, 1982). While a community of practice emphasises the importance of the collective knowledge of the community, social networking theory stresses the importance of the interaction between links.

Central to social networking theory is the idea that learning happens as a result of interaction between individuals (Haythornwaite, 2008). The main components of the network are the different relationships that an individual creates when interacting with others. As with an individual perspective, a distinction is made between the relative strength of connections. Strong ties (sharing more than one relationship) are important for their willingness to work with each other, sharing information and resources, while the role of weak ties (sharing one relationship) are also valuable since these connections can provide access to distant information and resources which would otherwise be difficult to access (Haythornwaite, 2008). As a result, a well-developed social network provides important social support and access to information and resources which improve social capital. For Haythornwaite (2008), frequent interaction between members creates a more cohesive network (where each individual is connected to any other individual in a network in some way). However, if some individuals do not communicate, then this might result in isolation within the network, that is, where an individual cannot reach other members of the network. 

Evidence shows that international students tend to have lower frequency of interaction with others. In a study of international students in Australia, results revealed that there was a high degree of variability of social interaction in the international student body and that those who were active tended to be active mostly with students from their country of origin (Neri and Ville, 2006). This evidence suggests that students may not be getting the access to social support that they need.
There is no agreed definition of social support in the academic literature. In an early study, Cobb (1976) defines social support as “the individual belief that one is cared for and loved, esteemed and valued, and belongs to a network of communication and mutual obligations.” Later definitions relate social support closely to the concept of a social network and emphasise the links to various people around an individual such as family, friends, classmates (EU Public Health Information, 2009).

Social support has been recognised as one of the most important supportive factors for university students and it has been linked to high self-esteem, lower levels of perceived stress and good academic performance (Friedlander et al., 2007:260). Fagg et al. (2008:243) state that social support has a dual role: it is directly beneficial in that it makes people feel welcome and supported; and it also helps indirectly as a buffer between stressful life events (such as illness to a family member) and stressful conditions within a particular social context (for example, exam stress). Parental support in particular, is considered important as they are the ones who are most influential over the course of a lifetime (Levitt, et al. 1994, in Eggens et al. 2008:556). For emerging adults, however, parental support becomes less important as they spend less time with their parents and more time with friends, partners and other university students. 

In addition to the source of social support, the type of support is also important. House (1981) states that social support can be provided in a number of ways, including: 

- Emotional support – this generally includes empathy, concern, caring, love and trust.
- Appraisal support – this involves transmission of information in the form of affirmation, feedback and social comparison.
- Informational support – this includes advice or suggestions
- Instrumental support – this encompasses help in the form of money, time or other types of assistance

Students may go to different groups for different problems (for example, a friend for emotional support, a parent for instrumental support) and different individuals may rely on friend support or family support to varying extents.

However, for many students on international pathways programmes, one of the main issues to deal with is a sudden loss of the social support that they received at home. As students make the transition from school to study in a foreign country, the connections and networks of support that they had in their home environment recede and this can result in feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, the ability to obtain social support may itself be a difficult skill to acquire as it takes time to cultivate relationships with different people and different groups and, since the international student body is subject to a rapid turnover of population, social support structures are not always easy to maintain (LaRose, 2001). As a result, it is becoming increasingly common for members of the international student body, who are distanced from their stable face-to-face relationships, to turn to the Internet for social support.
